Chaos in Parliament: Minority Stages Black-Protest as Kpadai Seat Controversy Sparks Violent Clash

On Tuesday evening, tensions boiled over in Ghana’s Parliament during deliberations on the motion to declare the Kpadai seat vacant.

The Minority caucus (NPP MPs) fiercely opposed the move, despite a ruling from the Tamale High Court ordering a re-run of the Kpadai constituency election. In a dramatic show of resistance, Minority MPs appeared in black attire and black nose masks, symbolizing their strong disapproval of the decision.

What began as a symbolic protest quickly escalated into chaos, as MPs from both the Upper and Lower Chambers engaged in heated exchanges that later turned physical, plunging the House into disorder.

During Government Business, the Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Frank Annoh Dompreh, declared that the Minority would boycott all parliamentary proceedings until the Kpandai seat issue is fully resolved. He further appealed to the Speaker to suspend all Government Business until an acceptable resolution is reached.

Despite the protest and repeated disruptions, the Majority caucus pushed ahead with the agenda, urging the Speaker to rule on several sectoral allocations. This decision intensified the unrest, leading to further clashes and widespread disorder in the chamber.

The Kpandai seat dispute continues to deepen political tensions, raising concerns about parliamentary stability as both sides refuse to back down.
