Government Team Visits Kwanyako Water Headworks to Assess Mining Damage

A government delegation led by Hon. Chief Mike Dery, Presidential Staffer at the Central Regional Coordinating Council (CRCC), has visited the Kwanyako Water Headworks to inspect the damage caused by illegal mining in the area.

He represented the Regional Minister during the visit.

He was joined by CDCO Kwesi Dawood, Regional NADMO Director, Hon. Oscar Mensah, DCE for Agona East, and other key stakeholders.

Purpose of the Visit

The team toured the facility to see, firsthand, how illegal mining has affected the surrounding environment and the water system.

Mr. Nicholas Okyere, Head of Extensions and Works at the plant, briefed the delegation on the history of the waterworks.

He explained how illegal mining has reduced water quality and interrupted supply to the 23 districts that depend on the Kwanyako system. He also highlighted how the situation is affecting daily life in those communities.
