Korle Klottey MP Poised to Become Ghana’s First Female Defence Minister

There is growing speculation that Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, may soon be appointed as Ghana’s next Minister for Defence by President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, who is the first daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has been a prominent figure in Ghana’s political landscape in recent years.

If confirmed, her appointment would mark a historic milestone, making her the first female Defence Minister under Ghana’s current constitutional dispensation.

Background to the Vacancy

The possible appointment follows a tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including key government officials such as the then Defence Minister and the Environment Minister. The incident sent shockwaves across the nation and left two critical ministerial positions vacant.

Since the tragedy, the government led by President Mahama has yet to officially name replacements for these roles, fueling public interest and political discussions about potential nominees.

Rising Expectations

In recent days, attention has increasingly turned to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings as a leading contender for the Defence portfolio. Political observers and sections of the public believe her experience, background, and leadership qualities position her as a strong candidate for the role.

Her advocate Mr. Uriel Atta-Kojo Ankrah is poised and happy the president’s decision making Dr. Zanetor the Defence Minister, adding that She will definitely excell to the Presidency ticket come the N.D.C primaries.
